The reigning South African Rally Raid champion, Henk Lategan and his navigator, Brett Cummings, are closing in on a maiden Dakar Rally title in Saudi Arabia.
The duo driving for the South African Toyota Gazoo Racing team, won today’s eighth stage from Al Duwadimi to Riyadh over a total distance of 737 kilometres.
They clocked a time of four hours, 51 minutes and 54 seconds one minute and 47 seconds quicker than countrymen and teammates, Guy Botterill and Dennis Murphy.
It was their second stage victory of this year’s rally after also winning the prologue on day one.
Lategan and Cummings have an overall lead of five minutes and 41 seconds over local hero Yazeed Al Rajhi and his German navigator, Timo Gottschalk of Team Overdrive Racing.
The rally ends in Shubaytah on Friday.
