Heavy traffic expected at Lebombo Border ahead of Christmas

The Border Management Authority (BMA) is preparing for increased traffic volumes at the Lebombo Port of Entry in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, starting today, the last Friday before Christmas.

The border, which connects South Africa and Mozambique, is expected to experience a surge in travellers heading home for the holidays.

Political unrest in Mozambique over the past few months has caused disruptions at the border, impacting both nations economically.

BMA Commissioner Dr. Mike Masiapato will oversee operations at the border from today until Christmas Day to ensure the smooth processing of people and vehicles.

“This day has been predicted as one of the busiest days for movements at all South African ports of entry, marking the start of the peak festive season on traffic,” the BMA says.

Social media reports indicate that unrest in Mozambique could escalate on Monday, adding to concerns about border operations.
