Heavy rains leave about KZN families homeless

About 20 families, who lost their homes following heavy rains that battered some parts of northern KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend, have found refuge at one of schools in Umhlabuyalingana as mop-up operations get underway.

Hundreds of families in the Umkhanyakude District have been displaced due to the inclement weather that left many homes submerged.

Jozini is said to be the worst affected with roads and public infrastructure destroyed.

Some of the flood survivors sheltered at Zwelinye Primary School in Mhlabuyalingana share how they managed to escape to safety.

One survivor says the water came into their homes, yards making them leave their homes, “Even our gardens have been flooded our livestock was swept away. We don’t know how we’ll survive we escaped with our families to save our lives and left everything behind.”

Another survivor adds that their cupboards have been submerged in water.

“My goats and cattle were swept away; the rest are dying because of the floods. We need help with food and blankets. Our situation is not ideal the mosquitoes are biting us, we can’t sleep.”
