Heavy rainfall, strong winds warning issued for KZN

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds over some parts of KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday. This after heavy rains accompanied thunderstorms on Sunday night, causing localised flooding.

“This warning is for severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, lightning, hail and damaging winds which will result in localised flooding and damage to infrastructure. The district municipalities affected by these thunderstorms that are forecasted are the uThukela, Gingindlovu, eThewini, Ilembe and parts of King Cetswayo District,” says Forecaster, Masego Nhlapo.

Earlier, the KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Department said they are working closely with Disaster Management in the province to clear debris and restore services.

In the Durban CBD, fallen trees and debris are being cleared from roads. No fatalities have been reported.

“Mop-up operations have commenced following severe storms that impacted coastal areas, including eThekwini and Pietermaritzburg. The storms, characterised by gale-force winds, thunder, and hail, uprooted trees, damaged power lines, and flooded major roads. Technical assessments are currently underway in both regions to determine the full extent of the damage,” says the department’s spokesperson, Senzeilwe Mzila.
