Heavy flooding prompts road closures in Mahikeng

With heavy rains and flooding affecting the North West province, some roads outside Mahikeng have been closed, forcing drivers to take alternative routes.

The flooding has affected key roads across the province, including the N18 outside Mahikeng and other roads are faced with significant disruptions.

Traffic authorities from the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management have been deployed to assist motorists and manage the situation.

Director of Traffic Management, Paul Stone, has urged motorists to remain vigilant on the roads.

“One thing that we plead the motorists to do is not to drive during the night. The weather forecast is that there will still be rain. We are also aware of the Vaal Dam which is open and might cause a problem on our roads in the areas (surrounding) the Bloemhof Dam which is above its capacity. For now, we make a plea to motorists to please be safe.”

Meanwhile, residents living on the banks of the Vaal River in Orkney near Klerksdorp have decided to brave the torrential rains and evacuate their homes.

This is as fifth sluice gate of the Vaal Dam was opened to manage rapidly increasing water levels due to heavy rainfall.

Others have decided to remain behind for now, saying they will vacate if necessary.
