[FILE] Diabetes is the major co-morbidities associated with serious COVID-19 complications and one of the most pressing health issues in South Africa.
Deputy Health Minister Joe Phaahla and Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko are to lead this year’s World Diabetes Day commemoration event in Hammanskraal, Tshwane.
World Diabetes Day aims to raise awareness about diabetes.
The disease, which occurs when the body has excessive blood sugar due to insufficient insulin production, affects approximately 830 million people worldwide, with the majority in low- and middle-income countries, according to the World Health Organisation.
Gauteng Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says, “Diabetes and Wellbeing” which emphasizes the importance of awareness around diabetes and other non-communicable diseases, promoting healthier lifestyle choices, and encouraging early screenings to prevent severe complications.”
“Conditions like diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases are increasing at an alarming rate, particularly among urban residents whose lifestyles often contribute to this health risk,” Modiba noted.
