The Hawks have withdrawn an urgent application to compel John Mpe, the executive mayor of the Polokwane municipality in Limpopo, to provide documents related to certain transactions.
A whistleblower circulated documents on social media alleging that over R750 million was paid irregularly to companies whose owners had close ties to Mpe and the municipal manager, Thuso Nemugumoni.
The urgent application for access to information was filed on Thursday last week. It is set to be heard in the High Court in Polokwane tomorrow.
In court papers, the notice of withdrawal has been filed by the Hawks as the first applicant and investigating officer, Calvin Kgatle as the second applicant.
Hawks national spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo says they won’t be able to comment as they are still engaging relevant parties on the matter.
Meanwhile, MEC for Co-operative Governance Basikopo Makamu has given Mpe until Tuesday to provide a report regarding allegations levelled against him.
