“Hands off Mkhwanazi” march cancelled

The march in support of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has been cancelled.

The “Hands off Mkhwanazi” march was supposed to take place in Durban this morning.

Scores of people including those from civil society groups, businesses and various unions, were expected to participate in the planned march.

This as the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) investigates allegations from an anonymous complainant that Mkhwanazi interfered with investigations against an official at a prison facility in the province.

Organisers have not given reasons for the cancellation of the march.

Meanwhile, Mkhwanazi says IPID has since withdrawn the letter which asked him to respond to the anonymous complaint.

Mkhwanazi says IPID wrote him the withdrawal letter two weeks ago however, it never confirmed whether the investigation against him has been withdrawn.
