President Cyril Ramaphosa says growing inequality across the world is deepening social divides and threatening global stability.
Speaking at the International Women’s Forum in Cape Town on Thursday, Ramaphosa revealed that a new G20 report has sounded the alarm on what he called an “inequality emergency.”
He says the findings show how wealth accumulation remains heavily skewed in favour of the richest one percent (1%) while the poorest continue to fall behind.
“Between 2000 and 2024, one percent of the world’s population captured 41% of all new wealth in the world, while just one percent of new wealth went to the poorest half of humanity. It found that in more economically unequal societies, fewer women complete higher education or are even represented in bodies that make the laws that govern them.”
