The Gauteng Department of Health has dismissed reports by some media that patients’ safety was compromised during the recently planned temporary power supply shutdown at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital‘s Emergency Units in Pretoria.
The shutdown was to enable maintenance work at the hospital. The department has further denied reports that there was chaos during the maintenance period.
“In an attempt to ensure that we adhere to OHS regulations and continue service delivery, our patients were moved within the facility. And the neighbouring facility as well, to ensure that patients are still seen and treated. While we switched off the electrical supply because the contractors wouldn’t have been in the position to work on it and still ensure staff safety with any kind of electrical supply being on at that moment in time,” CEO of Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Dr Lehlohonolo Majake-Mogoba elaborates.
