Govt to prioritise resolving SABC’s infrastructure crisis this year

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says the government will prioritise resolving the South African Broadcasting Corporation(SABC)’s financial and infrastructure crisis this year.

He confirmed that the National Treasury will first settle the public broadcaster’s billion-rand debt to Sentech and prevent the liquidation of the Post Office, before upgrading the SABC’s failing infrastructure.

The Department of Communications has welcomed a R700 million allocation, a portion of which must go toward settling debts.

Godongwana has acknowledged the dire state of the SABC’s facilities.

“What I’m doing at the moment is to attend to two urgent issues. One is avoiding the liquidation of the Post Office. Secondly, is to try to settle the SABC debt with Sentech. The next phase, during the course of the year, is to attend to the SABC infrastructure, which has to be attended. I made that point during the budget speech that we will attend to this matter during the course of the year,” says Godongwana.
