The Trade, Industry, and Competition Department says it’s working with various departments to establish a response plan in case South Africa and the US fail to reach a trade deal.
President Donald Trump has imposed a 30% tariff on South Africa, which will take effect next Thursday.
Negotiations are currently under way between the two countries as South Africa works towards easing the tariff.
The department’s spokesperson, Kaamil Alli, says they are hopeful that the deal they have put on the table has all the elements they need to be successful.
“Our chief priority is to ensure that we are able to negotiate a deal that makes sense for South Africa and the US in resetting our trade relationship. In the event that that doesn’t happen, the government is working across various departments to ensure that the response plan is adequate. This includes various government departments, including the National Treasury and the Department of Agriculture. The details of the support plan we are not able to share at this point in time as the negotiations with government departments continue.”
