Deputy Director- General (DDG) of the Department of Mineral Resources and Petroleum Ntokozo Nzimande says government is working on plans to reduce carbon emissions from coal-generated power stations.
The Department has classified coal as one of the critical minerals in South Africa for ensuring energy security.
Coal and other carbon-based fuels are major contributors to climate change.
Nzimande was speaking during a session at the Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town
“When we say we will continue to pursue coal for as long as it provides us the energy we need for electricity, it doesn’t mean we’re doing it in an irresponsible manner. There are interventions to clean our coal.”
