92 people lost their lives due to the floods
The Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Thandi Mahambehlale, is expected to visit the flood-stricken areas in the Eastern Cape today.
Mahambehlala will be accompanied by her counterparts from the Presidency, Nonceba Mhlauli, Home Affairs, Njabulo Nzuzo and Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Deputy Minister, Zolile Burns Ncamashe.
The delegation will commence its visit at Butterworth before proceeding to Mthatha, assessing ongoing relief efforts for the flood victims.
Currently, 92 people have lost their lives due to the floods that lashed parts of the province.
“The Deputy Minister’s visit is part of the government’s efforts to enhance the responses and measures that have been put in place to assist those affected by the floods that ravaged areas of Mthatha and Butterworth,” says Spokesperson for Human Settlements Minister, Tsekiso Machike.
Machike says government officials from Home Affairs, South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Human Settlements Emergency Housing and Health have been on the ground since the floods occurred, to assist affected communities.
