Govt must implement TRC’s recommendations: Saftu

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) says the government should focus on implementing the recommendations made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) instead of establishing another commission.

Saftu has expressed its dissatisfaction with the establishment of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the delays encountered in investigating and prosecuting TRC cases.

It states that it is a waste of taxpayers’ money.

The Union’s spokesperson Newton Masuku says commissions have been assembled in the past, but have not yielded any positive outcomes.

Masuku says, “If the history of commissions is anything to go by, there’s no reason why we should believe that the investigations and the recommendations of this now to be assembled commission will be implemented.”

“The Zondo Commission -no implementation, the Marikana Forum Commission – no implementation, Life Esidimeni arbitration – no implementation, the TRC itself – no implementation.”

He adds, “So history has taught us since 1994 that commissions are assembled, they cost taxpayers a lot of money, they are not implemented. There’s no reason whatsoever why we should believe that this commission that investigates another commission, which is absurd in the extreme, will be implemented.”
