Govt generated billions in infrastructure investment: Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa says government generated about R400 billion in infrastructure investment last year.

He says the private sector played an important role in what he describes as a milestone.

Ramaphosa was replying to the debate on his budget in Parliament yesterday.

“Last year, the total value of new projects by both the public and the private sectors amounted to R454 billion. The largest fixed investment in infrastructure in South Africa since 2021.”

Meanwhile, Ramaphosa has reiterated his position that the Constitution allows him to establish a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate allegations such as those relating to the alleged infiltration of the police by criminal syndicates.

The President says the Constitution empowers him to set up commissions of inquiry on public affairs to get to the bottom of untested allegations.

“The Constitution empowers the President with executive powers to establish commissions of inquiry into any matter of public concern. Yesterday, honorable [Nontando] Nolutshungu sought to discredit the process around the commission of inquiries, calling them a waste of money and a waste of time. But as we have demonstrated, such processes can have a profound impact. Think about the revitalisation of SARS,” adds Ramaphosa.
