Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says government is monitoring with caution, interventions by the Department of Agriculture following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in some parts of the country.
The department says a number of livestock in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal has been infected by foot and mouth disease.

During a media briefing in Cape Town about the outcomes of a Cabinet meeting held yesterday, Ntshavheni says vaccines have been secured to deal with the impact of the outbreak.
“The has ordered over 900 000 doses of vaccines. With the first batch expected to arrive soon. Where there are active outbreaks, all affected properties are placed under quarantine. No movement is allowed in these areas or farms. Large areas where individuals cannot be served with quarantine notices are declared management areas and the same restrictions apply. Plans are under way to establish a bio-security council that will bring together, police services, veterinarians, scientists, the border management authority and captains of industry to better respond to future outbreaks,” says Ntshavheni.
