Government extends best wishes as millions return back to school

As the 2026 academic year gets underway today, government has extended its best wishes to millions of learners returning to school, including those entering the schooling system for the first time.

The nationwide reopening of schools marks the resumption of teaching and learning after the summer recess.

Provincial education departments continue to manage late applications as many learners are still without placement.

In Limpopo, persistent heavy rainfall has forced schools in parts of the province to delay the reopening of the new academic year today.

Government has acknowledged the impact of recent flash floods on communities in parts of Limpopo and reaffirms that the safety, well-being, and continued access to education for affected learners remain a priority.

As authorities assess conditions and determine when schooling can safely resume in impacted areas, government calls on parents, educators, learners, communities, and social partners nationwide to work together in fostering safe, supportive, and disciplined learning environments.
