Humanitarian aid organisation, Gift of the Givers, has stepped in to bring temporary relief to displaced residents of the Skiet informal settlement in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape.

Heavy rainfall led to localised flooding in the area, leaving hundreds of people stranded. The affected people are accommodated at municipal halls and local schools.

Provincial Coordinator for Gift of the Givers, Corene Conradie says they will also be visiting other affected towns in the province.

“At this moment we are focusing on immediate relief which is your urgent relief items. We will sit with our stakeholders and engage with them to see when mop up operations will take place. If we can continue to phase two to help them, because many of them are living in poverty, to see how we can build the community together.”
