George building collapse police probe 65% complete: Premier Winde

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says the police investigation into the George building collapse disaster is 65% complete. He met with the Provincial Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile to receive an update on the investigation.

34 people died in the tragedy in May last year.

At the end of January, the Premier handed over the report containing the structural engineering findings from the independent investigation commissioned by the Western Cape Government into the disaster to Patekile and the investigation team.

“If charges need to be laid, they need to be laid so that we can actually get to finality because those families who lost loved ones deserve it. We need to make sure that we give them closure and that there are consequences for who was responsible for what happened and why this building collapsed and what changes, if any, need to be made. Or was it a failure in the process system and that will give us wherewithal as a province,” says Winde.
