The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed an investigation into allegations of rape against a teacher at Bronkhorstspruit Primary School is under way.
It is alleged that a foundation-phase learner was sexually assaulted by an educator. The accused appeared before the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court Wednesday and the matter has been postponed to the 11th of September.
The GDE said in a statement that it will refer the matter to the Education Labour Relations Council for further investigation and will support their processes.
Department spokesperson Steve Mabona says the educator will remain in custody.

Second rape case reported in Bronkhorstspruit
Mabona says in a separate matter, matriculants were allowed to continue with their preliminary exams at a Soshanguve school, despite disruptions due to allegations of sexual assault and ill treatment by teachers.
“In a separate incident at Tiyelelani Secondary School in Soshanguve, further disruptions were experienced on Wednesday. Three educators have been reported for allegedly ill-treating learners, sexual assault and ill-treating parents. To manage tensions and ensure stability, these educators have been preliminarily transferred to the district office while the Department conducts its enquiry. It is encouraging that preliminary examinations at the school continued without disruption. We agreed with all stakeholders that all learners are expected to return to normal schooling from tomorrow.”
