GBVF protest
Anti GBVF Movement Women for Change is urging government to declare Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) a national disaster.
The organisation staged a demonstration at the Union Buildings in Pretoria where it handed over a petition with more than 150 000 signatures.
This comes amid a surge in GBVF cases, sparking nationwide protests demanding justice for women and children.
The movement says government’s response to the fight against GBVF has been slow, contributing to South Africa recording some of its highest femicide rates to date.
“We haven’t seen a significant change. Our stats are still rising and we’re still the rape capital of the world. Women are still dying every day. Our stats speak for themselves. In essence, not enough is being done. This is not the first time, we see it all the time in the media and in conversations about GBVF. There have been marches, protests, and multiple petitions being signed,” says Spokesperson, Bulelwa Adonis
