GBV-related murders in KwaMbonambi’s ward 8 raises concerns

The uMfolozi Municipality at KwaMbonambi on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast has raised concerns over the high number of gender-based violence (GBV)-related murders in its ward 8.

This follows the brutal murder of a 16-year-old girl last week.

It’s alleged that Khethokuhle Mncube, who was doing matric, was reported missing on the 31st of July and her body was discovered dumped close to her home on the 7th of August.

Mayor Philani Bhengu says Mncube is the 12th woman to be killed in the area since the start of the year. Bhengu says so far there has only been one conviction in these murders.

“This is not the first incident in the same ward 8 under Umfolozi Local Municipality. As we all know that this is the 12th incident. All young women are being killed in the name of love, killed by the people who are supposed to protect them. Out of these eleven, there is only one who is behind bars. The rest are outside and that is what is worrying us the most.”

Meanwhile, two women were fighting for their lives at the Witbank General Hospital in eMalahleni after a man burned them.

Nompumelelo Gumede and Mbali Hill were allegedly set alight in a locked room in the Kwa Guqa township.

Hill’s cousin, Mpumelelo Hill, has appeared in the eMalahleni Magistrate’s Court on two counts of attempted murder and was remanded in custody.

He allegedly set alight Gumede, who is the 21-year-old mother of his child and 23-year-old Hill.
