Gauteng welcomes Christmas babies, teen mom among new mothers

Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko says a 16-year-old teenager is among the seven mothers who welcomed babies born on Christmas day at the Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Gauteng’s Ekurhuleni.
In 2024 Gauteng recorded 184 Christmas babies, the highest in the country.
Nkomo-Ralehoko presented each mother with gift hampers, symbolising support for their new beginnings. She says the issue of teenage mothers remains a concern.

“Yes we have a concern of teen mothers in the province and we have discovered a girl that’s got a child, I think at the age of 16. However, because we are friends of the courts now we will definately take her file to the Department of Justice and Social Development so that we can take it from there.

Meanwhile, MEC for Health in Limpopo, Dieketseng Mashego, has welcomed the birth of 38 newborn babies across the province on Christmas Day, from midnight until 06h00 on Thursday morning.
Sekhukhune District recorded the highest number of births with 13 babies, followed by Vhembe and Mopani Districts, which also recorded encouraging numbers.
Mashego has expressed her appreciation to all healthcare professionals on duty during the festive season for their dedication, professionalism and commitment to ensuring safe deliveries and quality maternal and newborn care.
“The birth of a child on Christmas Day is a powerful symbol of hope, renewal and joy. We congratulate all families and commend our health workers who continue to serve our communities selflessly, even on special days such as Christmas.”
She has further reassured the public that the Limpopo Department of Health remains committed to strengthening maternal, neonatal and child health services, and ensuring that all mothers and newborns receive dignified, safe and quality care throughout the festive season and beyond.
