The Gauteng Transport Department is cracking down on lawlessness in the taxi industry, removing dozens of unroadworthy minibuses from the road and finding hundreds of drivers without operating licences.
A further 184 minibus drivers were found operating without valid driver’s licences.
The operation comes amid a deadly wave of taxi violence that has seen killings surge across the province.
Provincial Transport spokesperson Lesiba Mpya says over 2800 infringement notices have been issued to vehicles due to defects and licencing offences.
“The MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Daiale-Tlabela, has raised serious concerns about this dangerous development and has been raising this with the taxi industry leadership to assist in rooting out this practice. It is unacceptable and puts other road users in danger.”
#GautengAtWork Between 15-21 September 2025, Gauteng Transport Inspectorate issued over 65 minibuses with discontinuation notices for being unroadworthy, immediately removing them from the road.
