Gauteng ramps up road safety operation ahead of festive travel surge

With festive travel expected to surge from tomorrow, the Gauteng Provincial Government is set to intensify road safety operations to curb fatalities.

In the first 21 days of December, 137 people have died in 124 road crashes across the province.

Authorities say they will ramp up roadblocks, vehicle roadworthiness checks, alcohol and drug testing, and enforcement against reckless driving.

The Department of Community Safety spokesperson, Ofentse Morwane has urged public transport operators to prioritise road safety.

“We therefore encourage public transport operators to prioritise road safety as the province is expecting high traffic volumes between Tuesday and the coming days because of Christmas. Joint operations along our major roads will include roadway inspections, driver compliance, overloading, alcohol and drug testing as well as reckless and negligent driving.”
