Ninety-five percent of schools in Gauteng have not been inspected for structural safety in the past five years.
This is contained in a written reply to a question by the Democratic Alliance in the Gauteng Legislature.
DA Gauteng spokesperson on Education Michael Waters says only 105 of the more than 2 000 public schools in the province were inspected.
He says this means 1 956 schools have not been evaluated for structural safety, putting the lives of learners and teachers in danger.
“It is inconceivable that a government would fail to ensure that all schools are inspected in accordance with the law and that the safety of our learners and teachers comes first and not second. Given the seriousness of this matter, I will be writing to the public protector, asking her office to investigate this unacceptable situation.”
