Gauteng learners asked not to give up on Mathematics and Science

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has pleaded with the province’s learners not to give up on Mathematics and Science subjects.

His plea comes after the province performed dismally in Mathematics dropping from 72.7 percent to 66.7 percent pass rate.

Chiloane says Mathematics, Science and Accounting are subject that will be a gateway to find job opportunities and improve the economy of the country.

Chiloane was outlining the province’s matric performance in 2025 in Centurion, where the Gauteng government and Education Department awarded well performing schools.

Gauteng obtained 89.6 percent and third position in the country’s matric results.

Chiloane also paid homage to Johannesburg West District which got 96.2 percent pass rate and becoming a top performing district in the country.

“Our gateway subject challenge is not a lack of ability among our young people; it is that we have not created conditions for them to invest those deliberate hours with proper coaching. We are fixing, we will expand the secondary school improvement programme in grade 9 and 10. Focus to intensify support in Mathematics earlier, before the matric pressure become about points rather than learning.”
