The Gauteng Department of Health is investigating how a mother and her baby died at one of its health facilities over the weekend.

The 32-year-old woman allegedly went to Westbury clinic after experiencing labour pains on Sunday. She died as well as her unborn baby.

The community in Johannesburg is enraged after the death of Miriam Singh. Community members gathered outside the clinic on Tuesday, demanding answers.

An investigation is under way by the Police and Department of Health to gain clarity on the death surrounding Singh.

Gauteng Health Spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba says they have noted the incident.

“The Gauteng Department of Health has taken note of the matter. I have now been handed over to quality assurance to investigate further, establish facts and recommend if any further steps need to be taken.”
