Gauteng Health Dept clears Westbury Clinic of mother’s death

The Gauteng Health Department has confirmed that its internal probe has cleared the Westbury Clinic in Johannesburg of an expectant mother’s death.

It says investigations into the death of 32 year-old Miriam Singh have found that an underlying condition is the cause.

Singh died within an hour of admission to the clinic on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the community protested outside the facility, demanding answers.

Department spokesperson Motaletale Modiba says, “The internal report found that the correct protocols were followed by the healthcare workers in attendance. The postmortem report has revealed that the patient had a serious underlying condition which contributed to the deterioration of their condition within a short space of time after presenting at our health facility.”

“Given the doctor-patient confidentiality, the department is unable to expatiate further the actual medical condition of the patient. However, this has been shared with the family concerned.”
