G20 banner seen in SA
The Gauteng Provincial Government has condemned the vandalism of G20 signage and the revamped infrastructure across the City of Johannesburg. It is alleged criminals are targeting streetlights and essential infrastructure.
The destruction includes the newly installed G20 Summit signage along the R55 route near Nasrec, south of Johannesburg.
Provincial government spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says this is concerning as the G20 Leaders Summit draws closer.
“The Gauteng Provincial Government is extremely concerned that the investment we’ve made to upgrade our road infrastructure is now being undermined by criminals. They’re targeting the recently revamped streetlights and traffic signals where the repairs have been completed. We call upon members of the public to work with the police to make sure that these criminals are arrested. This is not petty crime, but it’s a deliberate and malicious campaign by the people who have something to gain from the vandalism.”
