Gauteng Education’s poor planning to blame for unplaced learners: DA

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng believes what the provincial Education Department is experiencing is self-inflicted, with over 4 000 learners still need to be placed in schools for the 2026 academic year.

The party’s provincial shadow MEC for Education, Sergio Dos Santos says the department is facing learner placement pressure due to starting the application process late last year.

He says they’ve also received complaints of children being provided with options of schools that were very far from their homes.

“One of the biggest issues that we’re encountering is that the department is just taking children wherever they want to. I’ve got a particular case where a child in Pretoria is given the options of schools that are 60 kilometres away and one of the schools is up to 95 kilometres away, as schools that are within her district which is up to five and then there’s one that’s 10 kilometres away, she has no availability for her children. So, this is the problem with the Department of Education, they don’t plan ahead.”
