Community members attend Gauteng Education Department’s School Safety Imbizo in Ratanda on March 1, 2025.
The Gauteng Education Department is holding its final School Safety Imbizo in Ratanda in the Sedibeng region.
It is a platform on which parents, learners, education activists and police share ideas on how best to improve safety in schools.
Many schools have continued to face serious challenges including increased violence, bullying, gangsterism, substance abuse and theft.
Similar Imbizos have been held in Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and the West Rand.
The Department’s Spokesperson Steve Mabona says, “There’s a commitment from the police to work with us to make sure that there’s police visibility, which would probably assist, but also when community members report any criminal activity police need to be swift in their response, because in many times they would indicate that police took long to arrive. That is why we want them to work with us to make sure we are prioritised as a sector. “
