G20 handover will be a low-key affair: Dangor

The Sherpa of South Africa’s G20 presidency and Director-General of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Zane Dangor, says both South Africa and the United States want the handover of the G20 presidency to be a low-key affair.

It will probably be done by a senior official from Dirco to a US diplomatic representative at the department’s offices in Pretoria on Tuesday.

South Africa had made it clear on Saturday that the United States could not send its embassy chargé d’affaires to receive the presidency gavel from President Cyril Ramaphosa at the summit.

President Ramaphosa officially closed the G20 Summit in Nasrec, South of Johannesburg, yesterday. The historic gathering pledged to extend support to low- and middle-income countries as they face debt challenges.
