President Cyril Ramaphosa walks past G20 member flags
As South Africa gears up to host the upcoming G20 foreign ministers meeting later this week, International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola says that the meeting is an opportunity for the global community, especially foreign ministers to engage on issues relating to current geo-politics.
The meeting takes place in the midst of diplomatic tensions and aid cuts by the US.
Lamola says he expects robust engagement of ministers on pertinent issues affecting the world.
“The issues of geo-politics will be at the center of the meeting of foreign ministers. And we see this as an opportunity for us to bridge between the global south and the global north.
To advocate for development in the global south, and also for the African continent, in terms of financing for development. It’s still an indictment to the world, that we still receive less financing for development and also with regards to issues of climate change, less than three percent of the global financing only, goes to the African continent when we’re the most affected by climate change.”
