The Walter Sisulu University (WSU) student who was gunned down during a protest three days ago will be buried this morning in his home village of Masakala outside Matatiele in the Eastern Cape.
Sisonke Mbolekwa’s killing has sparked a debate about the safety of students at institutions of higher learning.
Two other students were critically wounded. The suspect is the university’s residence manager. Mourners have converged on Mbolekwa’s home.
Academics, politicians, fellow students, human rights activists and villagers will converge here to bid farewell to Mbolekwa.
This third year Bachelor of Education student lost his life during a protest at Walter Sisulu University.
Mbolekwa family’s spokesperson Nelson Gqada says hundreds of mourners are expected to attend this funeral service.
“This was a tragedy for the family, a lot of people are expected, we are expecting quite a lot. From the Walter University community, including the council, the students and everyone else, they might be here because they have been coming here at home for support. The community at large is going to be here.”
Fellow students believe that Sisonke’s death highlights many challenges facing students in the country.
