Local and international flights are currently being affected by a shortage of aviation fuel at the Cape Town International Airport.
The Fuels Industry Association of South Africa Chief Executive, Avhapfani Tshifularo, says the shortage is caused by an ongoing audit process by the South African Revenue Services (SARS).
It has restricted the distribution of aviation fuel at Burgan Cape Terminals at the Port of Cape Town, which supplies the airport with fuel.
Tshifularo says the shortage started on Saturday and is expected to end this Friday.
“Contingency measures are to obtain jet A1 fuel from other airports such as OR Tambo International Airport. This is not sustainable as the optimal way to supply Cape Town International Airport. The sustainable way to supply Cape Town International Airport is from Cape Town supply sources. We are talking about 15 million litres of jet A1 fuel stocks under detention. This is estimated 30 days’ worth of supply for the affected airlines,” adds Tshifularo.
