Free State elderly farmer accused of murder denies accusations

An 80-year-old man accused of being involved in the murder of a man on his farm has denied knowing and killing the deceased.

The accused says he was on vacation at the time of the murder and burial of the deceased.

The accused was arrested after the discovery of a decomposed body of a man on his farm on the 20th of August in the Free State on the road between Kroonstad and Welkom.

It is alleged that the man was fatally shot and secretly buried in an unmarked grave.

In a bid to be released on bail, his defence submitted to the Kroonstad Magistrate’s Court that the accused can afford R10 000 bail and will not tamper with evidence or interfere with investigations.

The court has denied the state’s bid to postpone the bail application to a later date.

In previous reports, the elderly farmer allegedly confessed to killing a man a decade ago, saying that he would kill again if attacked on his farm.
