Four suspects killed in a police shootout in Khayelitsha


Four suspects have been shot and killed following a confrontation with police in Site C Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa says members of the Provincial Combat Team were following up on information about suspects allegedly involved in the extortion of businesses in the area.

Officers identified a vehicle matching the suspects’ description and attempted to pull it over on Japhta K Masemola Road. Potelwa says the suspects pointed firearms at police when officers approached.

“The suspects pointed the police with the firearms and as a consequence four yet to be identified men were shot and killed. Three firearms were seized from the scene,” says Potelwa.

Police say all four suspects were fatally wounded during the confrontation. Three firearms believed to belong to the suspects were recovered at the scene.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched an investigation into the incident.
