Global animal welfare group, Four Paws, is challenging the nation to turn February into a month of action and compassion.
This as part of celebrating National Love Your Pet Day on 20 February.
The organisation calls on every community to make sterilisation a priority for responsible pet care.
Director of Four Paws South Africa, Fiona Miles, says South Africa faces a pet homelessness crisis, with millions of pets that are homeless.
Miles adds that free-roaming dogs and cats multiply quickly and leads to disease risks and strain on local welfare groups.
“Right now, it’s estimated the 22% of our countries cats and dogs that’s over 4 million animals are homeless and shelters are overwhelmed.
Sterilisation is not just a veterinary procedure it’s a community solution; it prevents unwanted litters and reduces disease risks. It helps pets live longer happier lives. This Love Your Pet Day on 20th of February and World Spay Day on 24 February take action book sterilisation, support local drives and share this message ‘ loving your pets means protecting lives.”
