Four people have been killed following an altercation at a tavern in Sundumbili on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast.
Among the deceased are two off duty police constables.
Four more people were shot and injured and were rushed to hospital.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says police have closed off the tavern after it was established that it was operating illegally.
“It is alleged that the deceased persons were consuming alcohol when an altercation ensued between one police constable and a group of five men. The argument was resolved peacefully and the constable bought alcohol for the five men. A little later, the same constable had a scuffle with the same five men outside the tavern which resulted in the constable being shot at. A second police officer also sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to a local healthcare facility where he was certified dead on arrival.”
