Representatives from WaterCan take to the streets of Melville in Johannesburg protesting against prolonged water shortages
The People’s Water Forum has accused government of ignoring Johannesburg’s deepening water crisis.
The forum addressed a media briefing at Constitution Hill Wednesday morning.
It revealed it has been reaching out to the City of Johannesburg, the Gauteng government, the Department of Water and Sanitation and even the Presidency, with little response.
Executive Director of WaterCAN and chairperson of the People’s Water Forum, Ferrial Adam, is now calling for urgent and transparent collaboration between communities, government and the private sector before the crisis worsens.
“By the way, we wrote to Rand Water in 2023, we never had a response because they don’t respond to civil society. The minister, the deputy minister, the premier who may be busy going to hotels and all of these kinds of things – we have been forced actually issue a statement of our own.”
