Former JMPD Chief David Tembe laid to rest in Johannesburg

Tributes continue to pour in for the late former Chief of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), David Tembe.

Tembe has been hailed as a diligent and hard-working officer.

He died this week after he was found unresponsive in his home. The exact cause of death is still not known.

During his funeral service on Saturday at the Johannesburg Central College in Fourways, a family representative said Tembe was a man who was full of life and deeply committed to his work and community.

“The last words to you will say, don’t stand in my grave and weep. I’m not asleep. I’m not here. I’m thousands of miles away in the galaxy. Don’t weep for me. I’m not dead. He was a very kind man; we will miss him. May your soul rest in peace.”

Tembe was the former Chief of the JMPD, Chief of the National Traffic Police at the RTMC, a strategic advisor, and a former Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety.

He is remembered for his extensive career in public safety, which began as a paramedic in 1981.
