Due to the rapid increase of inflows into the #VaalDam, a fifth sluice gate has been opened at 10h00 this morning to manage water levels that have increased overnight as a result of the ongoing rainfall in the Vaal River catchment.
The Vaal River Corridor Tourism Association has warned that floods in the Bloemhof area in the North West could lead to thousands of job losses.
Many businesses had to evacuate the banks of the Vaal River, when it burst its banks.
This followed the opening of radial gates at the Bloemhof Dam this week.
A fifth sluice gate was opened at the Vaal Dam.
The association’s Chairperson Sias Meyer says the situation is worrying
“Thousands of people have lost their jobs during this period for businesses being underwater. The industry is also losing revenues because there is no business. We are all out of business. On the 16th of February 2023, we also had floods like this. We are still recovering from that, and now again. This is bad for the South African Tourism.”
