Floods and outages hit Cape Town amid heavy rains

Disruptive rainfall leading to the flooding of roads is expected over the City of Cape Town, Cape Winelands, West Coast and Overberg Districts of the Western Cape today.

Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management centre says it has received reports on a few incidents in the past 24 hours.

They include flooding in areas such as Khayelitsha and Athlone on the Cape Flats.

“We also had power outages that were reported in Langa and Athlone and Rondebosch. Our energy department is responding to that as well,” says the centre’s spokesperson, Sonica Lategan.

She says that at around 6 o’clock, the N1 outbound in Okavangu was closed as a sinkhole was forming.

“Our roads infrastructure department was activated to attend to that and all the roads are currently open,” adds Lategan.

Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management centre has completed assessing the damage that inclement weather conditions have caused in the area. It has now started to roll out humanitarian aid to affected residents.

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for disruptive rain over most parts of the Western Cape.

“The areas are very saturated at the moment and we expect that more reports will come in of flooding. So we also activated our humanitarian relief partners to attend to displaced people in terms of soft relief, where they hand out hot meals, blankets and warming clothing,” says Lategan.

“Our roads, infrastructure and water and sanitation partners or departments within the city are on the ground to see where they can pump water away from these areas,” she adds.
