Five Walter Sisulu University students are expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape on charges of public violence, arson, damage to infrastructure and property.

The students were arrested during a violent protest at the university yesterday

The students were protesting against the ruling by the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court which granted the institution’s Residence Manager and Manelisi Mampane, a R10 000 bail on Tuesday.

Mampane is accused of fatally shooting and injuring two other students during a protest on campus in April.

Meanwhile, AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has questioned the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court’s decision in the Eastern Cape to grant bail to the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) residence manager, Manelis Mampane, who is accused of fatally shooting a student and wounding another two.

Dalindyebo addressed the protesting students after they had a confrontation with the police.

“We are sick and tired of judges that are bribed and taking abnormal decisions, corrupt decisions. This time around, we will not respect that stupid court of law. It’s not a violent protest, it’s a violent judgment, which violates the people’s rights and violates my children’s rights. Therefore, I am going to the Judge President.”
