Five suspects arrested for illegal possession of unlicensed firearms

Five suspects aged between 34 and 70-years-old have been arrested for illegal possession of unlicensed high calibre firearms and ammunition in the northern areas of KwaZulu-Natal.

Police say the five were arrested separately during intelligence driven operations at Melmoth and Nkandla policing precincts.

KZN police spokesperson Paul Magwaza says a foreign national is amongst those arrested, he could not produce documentation permitting him to be in possession of such a firearm, he was then arrested and charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Magwaza says all the recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistics testing to ascertain if they had not been instrumental in the commission of any crime.

“Police officers proceeded to the next targeted house where they arrested a 34-year-old suspect after two shotguns were found in his possession, one of which had a double barrel. The suspect was arrested for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and is likely to be linked to cases of murder committed in the Melmoth area. under the Nkandla policing precinct where they arrested a 70-year-old suspect for possession of an unlicensed AK47 assault rifle. The last arrest for the operation was that of a 52-year-old suspect who was found in possession of an unlicenced R5 rifle with thirteen rounds of ammunition.”
