Five killed during shootout with police in Eastern Cape


Five suspects have been killed during a shootout with the police’s Technical Response Team and National Intervention Unit in separate incidents in the Eastern Cape.

The incidents occurred over the weekend. In the first incident, two alleged extortionists were in a vehicle linked to a kidnapped Chinese national in Komani when a shootout with police happened.

Meanwhile, in Tlokoeng, three suspects allegedly opened fire on the members of the National Intelligence Unit, and police retaliated, killing all three on the scene.

“During a stop, the suspects opened fire on the police and police reiterated in self-defense, fatally wounding both occupants, on Sunday at the Tlokoeng CBD. Members of the National Intervention Unit were following up on intelligence information when they spotted a vehicle with the suspects. The suspects opened fire and then a shootout ensued. All three were fatally wounded, three vehicles and firearms were ceased,” says police Provincial Spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana.
