First state witness expected to testify in asbestos roof removal case

The first state witness in the R255-million asbestos roof removal case is expected to testify on Tuesday.

The accused and their legal representatives made a brief appearance before the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein for a pre-trial.

Former Premier Ace Magashule, his then PA, Moroadi Cholota, businessman Edwin Sodi and former Free State Human Settlement MEC Olly Mlamleli and then HOD, Tim Mokhesi, among others, are among 18 accused who are set to go on trial for over 70 charges, including fraud, corruption, and money laundering.

During the proceedings, it was revealed that Mokhesi’s application for legal aid was denied.

Mokhesi told the court that he is unable to afford his legal fees.

Judge Phillip Loubser says the court has a mandate to help the accused during the trial in case of not having legal representation.

“I just want to inform you Mr Mokhesi that the second task wherein the accused does not have legal representation, the court has a duty to assist that accused during cross-examination. This court will definitely carry out that duty, for any accused in this matter who is not represented,” adds Loubser.
