The first group of Ghanaian nationals is expected to be repatriated from South Africa on Wednesday. This as tension involving locals and migrants continues in parts of South Africa.
Dozens of Ghanaian nationals have already gathered outside the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria ahead of a security screening process scheduled for Sunday morning. About 800 people have so far indicated their willingness to return to Ghana.
However, only 300 have been processed. Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa Benjamin Anani Quashie says many Ghanaians no longer feel welcome.

Quashie adds, “The situation in this country has been fluid till now. I know we’re not going to run away from the realities on the ground. People are not happy. People have lost economic value in everything that they do.”
“Once you are in a country and there are challenges like this, you feel unwelcome and I think that that is why government wants to come in and say, look, if you are not welcome here, come back home, because you are a citizen of Ghana and we’ll be able to reintegrate you into the society,” says Quashie .
